Our Score
The winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes and an Oscar for best foreign film, Volker Schlöndorff's adaptation of Günter Grass's allegorical novel compensates for diminishing the original's thematic complexity with some supreme visual bravado. Even more laudable is the performance of David Bennent, as the young Danziger, who decides at the age of three to stop growing and express his disgust at the folly of the adults, so casually treading the path to Nazism, by emitting glass-shattering screams and thumping his beloved tin drum. Although occasionally over-reliant on expressionist excess, it's a film that still manages to be both powerful and memorable.
