Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Although ardent sci-fi fans will find plenty that's familiar in director Leigh Janiak's first feature, it still has more than enough taut and intimate chills to make its mark. Harry Treadaway and Rose Leslie play young newlyweds honeymooning in a remote lakeside cabin. Wandering off alone in the forest, Leslie returns disorientated and strangely forgetful of their past romantic history. Treadaway puts his wife's behaviour down to conjugal paranoia at first, but soon weird lights are shining into their bedroom and something tentacled is creeping into dark orifices. The low budget and single location mean the sinister thrills mainly come from the headliners' captivating performances - especially Treadway's moving helplessness - and a script that's more concerned with showing marital relationship breakdown than anything too alien. And it will be a hard heart indeed that won't be affected by the way the story is resolved.
