Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Lily Collins and Sam Claflin play platonic best friends who seem destined for each other, but over the years life-changing events and their own misunderstandings conspire to keep them apart. The film exists in a world only found in romantic comedies - pretty people living out stories of increasing improbability to a chirpy soundtrack (here including Lily Allen). Children, marriages, even deaths are seen as nothing more than obstacles to this near-miss romance, to the point where you either get swept up in the romance of it all, or disengage completely. Collins spends the majority of the film staring dramatically into the middle distance at Claflin's charming but clueless male lead. She's likeable enough but doesn't entirely convince as an "everygirl". Love, Rosie is as fluffy as 2007's PS I Love You, also an adaptation of a Cecelia Ahern novel, and has the OMG! energy of a teen comedy, but though it aims for the heart it ultimately feels derivative and saccharine.
