Our Score
Dazzlingly deceitful and ingeniously intricate, this kidnap thriller from Hideo Nakata consistently defies expectations as it shifts perspectives and time frames to compelling effect. Miki Nakatani's disappearance after a lunch date with wealthy husband Ken Mitsuishi comes out of the blue for viewers. But it's nothing compared to the twists and double-crosses that follow the ransom demand delivered by Masato Hagiwara. Owing more to Hitchcock and film noir than Nakata's horror hit Ring, the labyrinthine plot offers no compromises as it wilfully confuses. Well-timed set pieces, such as those involving a shallow grave and an abandoned aquarium, keep the nerves on edge until the audacious climax.
