Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

The superb use of three-strip Technicolor doesn't altogether compensate for a certain dullness in this portrayal of the Wild West's most famous outlaw from first-time feature director and former editor David Miller. Despite Gene Fowler's literate and inventive screenplay, which makes Billy (played by superstar Robert Taylor dressed entirely in black) and his nemesis Pat Garrett (here renamed Jim Sherwood) childhood friends, fans of this oft-told tale will be disappointed. At the time, however, the image of the Kid endured for another two decades as boys all over the world followed his black-clad comic-book adventures in the Thriller Picture Library.
