Our Score
Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock star in this uneven adaptation of Alice Hoffman's novel, playing sisters who are descended from witches. Kidman is the wilder sibling, while Bullock is the home-loving store owner who falls for Aidan Quinn, the detective who investigates when Kidman's abusive boyfriend disappears. There are nice supporting performances from Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest as the sisters' equally witchy aunts, but director Griffin Dunne - who made the blackly comic Addicted to Love - ultimately fails to make either a moving comedy romance or a funny romantic comedy. It's like The Witches of Eastwick with its humour and sizzle removed.
