Sue Heal
Ingrid Bergman gives an exceptional, Oscar-winning performance in this gripping tale of a refugee passed off as the Romanov Grand Duchess by a cunning opportunist (played by Yul Brynner). A clever, insightful script puts flesh on the bones of an already intriguing mystery, but it is Bergman who makes this movie a minor classic. She portrays vulnerability and dignity in equal measure with a rare screen intelligence, and Helen Hayes is also very fine as Anastasia's sceptical grandmother.
Summary
In 1920s Paris, exiled Russians claim they have found the daughter of the last Tsar, who was originally believed to have been killed with the rest of her family. She is taken into the care of a General and groomed until she can convince Anastasia's cousin Prince Paul that she is genuinely the tsarina and inherit a fortune. Historical drama, starring an Oscar-winning Ingrid Bergman, and Yul Brynner.
