Excalibur, this isn't. But, as dumbed-down derring do for the kids, Merlin the Return has its entertaining moments. The plot has King Arthur's evil half-brother, Mordred, concocting an escape from the Netherworld, while Merlin tries to awaken the slumbering King Arthur and his knights so that they can face their old foe. Craig Sheffer makes a nicely hissable Mordred, but Rik Mayall plays Merlin like he was auditioning to be the next Doctor Who. Patrick Bergin, as a lacklustre Arthur, looks more concerned with wondering where his career has gone since Sleeping with the Enemy. The sets are cheesy and there's a touch of Spinal Tap about a climax that oddly relocates Stonehenge from Salisbury Plain to a forest clearing. But the film has one genuinely scary sequence, and, overall, there's enough action hokum to guarantee a watchable diversion for youngsters aged seven to ten.

A scheming American scientist plots to wreak havoc on the world by resurrecting evil magician Mordred - leaving Merlin and his companions King Arthur, Guinevere and Sir Lancelot to embark on a daring quest to save the day. Magical fantasy, starring Rik Mayall, Tia Carrere, Patrick Bergin, Adrian Paul and Craig Sheffer.
