Our Score
The elaborate deaths are as inventive, witty and gory as ever in the fifth outing of the long-running horror franchise. Here, a lucky few survive a suspension-bridge collapse after the usual premonition, only to be told by returning creepy coroner Tony Todd that they've merely delayed their grim reaping. Making his feature directorial debut after assisting James Cameron on Titanic and Avatar, Steven Quale keeps the fun-scary slaughter visually impressive - the horrific bridge disaster easily being the most spectacular opener in the series. There's also a new plot rule - Death spares any survivor willing to kill to inherit their victim's mortality - which increases the thriller elements, though it's the fatal laser-eye surgery and nasty acupuncture demise that cause most squirming here. The turgid exposition between the carnage doesn't help but fans of the franchise will enjoy how it cleverly connects with the original movie and replays every death from the entire series so far over the closing credits.

The survivors of a suspension bridge disaster realise death itself is after them for cheating fate when they begin getting mysteriously killed one by one in a series of horrific accidents. However, they discover they can save themselves by killing each other. Horror sequel, starring Nicholas D'Agosto and Emma Bell.
