Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

David Tennant and Rosamund Pike, as an unhappily married couple, are the headline names in this disarming comedy drama, but it's the kids who are the real stars. That won't come as a surprise to fans of BBC sitcom Outnumbered - series creators Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin are co-writer/directors here, but the material is a little more hefty. Billy Connolly plays grandpa who, thanks to illness, is about to celebrate what'll be his last birthday. Hence, mum and dad pack the kids (Emilia Jones, Bobby Smalldridge and the hilarious little Harriet Turnbull) in the car and drive up to Scotland to put on a show of family togetherness - despite separation and impending divorce. Inevitably, the children say too much in laugh-out-loud scenes, but what happens when grandpa takes them to the beach also brings pathos. The tonal shifts can be a touch jarring, but there is a thin line between comedy and tragedy that is all the more poignant seen through innocent eyes.
