Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Ed Speleers of Downton Abbey and Will Poulter of We're the Millers fly the flag for Britain in a con caper which, nonetheless, panders to an American audience. Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones) and Sebastian De Souza (Skins) round out the hot, young, home-grown cast playing credit card fraudsters who inadvertently rip off a vicious mobster (Thomas Kretschmann). It's a strong start to the story, as they're given just two weeks to rustle up two million pounds to pay off their debt - or else. To this end, they contrive a scam that involves a trip to Miami, a prince, several dodgy disguises, and a good deal of diamonds. But the transatlantic sojourn is a mistake, smacking less of clever plotting than a sly marketing ploy to attract American movie-goers. Director Julian Gilbey (A Lonely Place to Die) might have stood a better chance had the film stayed quintessentially British - and if the cast's talents (especially Poulter's) had not been squandered. There are enough half-decent moments to make this passable entertainment for a night in on the sofa, but in view of its ambitions, Plastic just doesn't quite cut it.
