Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

A no-holds-barred spectacle from Cecil B DeMille, impressively capturing the landscape of the Wild West, teeming with hordes of Sioux and Cheyenne Indians, and merrily ignoring historical truths. This western also presents us with a totally fictitious romance between Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, gloriously glamorised by Gary Cooper and Jean Arthur. A highly enjoyable action epic in true DeMille style, the film features James Ellison as Wild Bill's friend Buffalo Bill, John Miljan as General Custer and Frank McGlynn Sr as Abraham Lincoln. For what it's worth, the then unknown Anthony Quinn can be spotted, done up as a Cheyenne brave.
