Twelve women give birth to blond alien offspring after a strange force puts their community into a trance, in this remarkably faithful adaptation of John Wyndham's novel The Midwich Cuckoos. In a film that is compelling, creepy and often unbearably tense, an icy George Sanders becomes their teacher and then tries to halt their world domination plans. Superbly acted, with the human/family side of the horror unusually explored more than the fantasy elements, this British near-classic is a sci-fi treat and remains so, even in the face of John Carpenter's weak remake starring Christopher Reeve, which bypassed cinemas and went straight to video in this country.

The residents of a sleepy English village are mysteriously placed in a trance for 24 hours - and when they awake, many of the women are pregnant. However, the children that are born prove to be alien beings with advanced telepathic powers that allow them to control people's minds. sci-fi thriller adapted from John Wyndham's classic novel The Midwich Cuckoos, starring George Sanders, Barbara Shelley and Michael Gwynn.
