Our Score
Based on the novel by Deborah Moggach, this drama set in 17th-century Amsterdam sees the booming tulip market providing the possibility of escape for an unhappily married woman (Alicia Vikander) and her lover (Dane DeHaan). As they invest in the tulip industry in an attempt to raise enough money to run away together, director Justin Chadwick (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom) fills the screen with visual delights, from the ornate costumes to the lavishly appointed houses. Sadly, though, his film becomes a slog as the many subplots crash into one another. Supporting cast members like Christoph Waltz and Judi Dench are utterly wasted as the film fails to squeeze a novel's worth of content into the time provided, and the result is a production that feels rushed, despite its much-beleaguered development. Worse than its script, though, which lacks any emotion as it races from one part of the story to the next, is the scant chemistry between Vikander and DeHaan. Beyond their sudden, awkward love scenes, both go through the motions with little sign of the burning passion that might have elevated this ultimately disappointing adaptation.
