What happens after Tanner is outed by his classmates and becomes the title "gay best friend" for three high school queen bees?
Nearly 15 years after Jawbreaker, director Darren Stein returns to features with another high-school comedy. It's a breezy, if hardly original, coming-out saga where clique queen bees Andrea Bowen, Xosha Roquemore and Sasha Pieterse are convinced that a gay best friend is the latest must-have accessory. They seize upon the fact that classmate Michael J Willett has been accidentally outed and compete to have him accompany them to the upcoming prom. However, by allowing himself to become a plaything of the mean girls, Willett alienates closeted buddy Paul Iacono who, in turn, plots Carrie-like revenge for prom night. On the surface the film resembles a gay reworking of a John Hughes teen flick, except the slang often rings hollow and the script too often falls back on cliché and caricature. Nevertheless, this has its moments and is perkily played by a talented ensemble that includes Natasha Lyonne (American Pie) and Will & Grace's Megan Mullally.
