Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

After the success of The Pajama Game, Broadway's George Abbott and Hollywood's Stanley Donen teamed up again for this second show by the same writing team. Despite this talent, this time round the show didn't quite transfer, despite being a bagful of energy on Broadway, a supporting cast comprised entirely of the stage cast, and the retention of the original Bob Fosse choreography (plus Mr Fosse himself for one number). The problem lies with Tab Hunter in the difficult leading role: to put it mildly, he lacks pizzazz. There's still a lot of fun to be gleaned, though: Gwen Verdon (Mrs Fosse) is a knockout as Lola, and Ray Walston is arguably the definitive movie Devil, Mr Applegate.
