Our Score
The sight of Lionel Barrymore in drag adds a note of merriment to this engagingly bizarre tale of terror, which was the penultimate movie from director Tod Browning, Hollywood's first ever master of the macabre. Barrymore plays a wrongly convicted criminal who escapes from prison and poses as a sweet old dollmaker, exacting his revenge by using a serum that shrinks people to Barbie size. The scares may be dated, but the miniaturised special effects, relying on oversized props, are still enthralling, and the offbeat fantasy atmosphere Browning expertly conjures up is highly unusual.
