Our Score
A deeply affecting and beautifully shot, if rather coolly observed tale of two Italian stonemason brothers who find they can no longer make a living restoring cathedrals in their native Tuscany. Arrriving in America around the time of the First World War, they end up working for DW Griffith on his epic Intolerance. In their first English language film, directors Paolo and Vittorio Taviani have created a deeply symbolic story, shot through with autobiographical resonance, which throws up complex issues of fraternal intimacy, emerging democracy, the role of the extended family and the disintegration of local communities. If this sounds a touch heavy - it is. At the same time, the film is imbued with such a lyrical love of film-making and sterling performances that you find yourself drawn into its potent web.
