Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This is a smashing little comedy from the Lavender Hill Mob pairing of director Charles Crichton and co-writer TEB Clarke. Michael Redgrave is on sparkling form as a minor league crook whose detentions at Her Majesty's pleasure are explained away to his son as missionary excursions to Africa. The plot slows slightly after the son becomes judge Robert Morley's assistant and Redgrave slips into retirement. But normal service is resumed with the smuggling episodes and the hilarious divorce trial, staged to delay Redgrave's day in court. Joan Hickson and John Le Mesurier shine in a superior supporting cast.
