Our Score
Vaguely interesting for causing controversy at the time, this tacky tale of illicit teenage romance hasn't aged particularly well. Martin Hewitt and Brooke Shields are the mismatched youngsters who fall in love, much to the disapproval of the latter's father (Don Murray). Director Franco Zeffirelli, who had a hit with his notorious 1968 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, brings a modicum of class and style to the affair, but not enough to overcome the cloying sentimentality on show. Hewitt fares better than Shields in the lead role but, ultimately, it was another teenager who made the most of this break: Tom Cruise, here making his feature debut.

A fraught and obsessive love affair develops between a schoolgirl and a 17-year-old student. Franco Zeffirelli's drama based on Scott Spencer's novel, starring Brooke Shields, Martin Hewitt and Shirley Knight, with an early appearance by Tom Cruise.
