Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This lengthy First World War charade is an underrated and utterly charming valentine from director Blake Edwards to his wife, Julie Andrews, who takes the lead role of a Mata Hari-type figure. The star is marvellously supported by Rock Hudson as a dashing air ace and by British satirist Lance Percival in his best film role. The score is particularly apt, the highlight being a lovely Johnny Mercer/Henry Mancini ballad called Whistling Away the Dark that deserves to be more popular. The film was shot in Panavision by Red River cinematographer Russell Harlan, and also boasts some marvellous aerial dogfight sequences. It does take itself rather too seriously at times, though, and non-Andrews fans won't get much out of it.
