Our Score
Charlotte Brontë's gothic romance has been adapted for the screen many times, with the 1943 version starring Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine being the most memorable. Here, the title role is played by Mia Wasikowska, who made such an impression in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, and she carries the burden with ease. Though looking as fragile as porcelain, she stands firm against Michael Fassbender's fiery Mr Rochester, who employs her to be a governess at his gloomy mansion. At times, the noticeable age difference casts him as a predator rather than a potential lover, but Fassbender deftly conveys a deeper yearning for something pure and wholesome to cherish. The couple's relationship is carefully staged by Cary Joji Fukunaga, perhaps overly so, as there's too much of the formality usually associated with period dramas and not enough of the naturalism that the director brought to his debut Sin Nombre. It is, above all, a very respectful treatment, though a little more of the wild abandon that originally draws Jane to Rochester would have helped.
