La Signora senza Camelie

La Signora senza Camelie

Michelangelo Antonioni (1953)

Our Score
Michelangelo Antonioni's third feature continues to explore the alienating effects of modern society in what was originally conceived as a vehicle for Gina Lollobrigida. Instead, Lucia Bosé shoulders the burden of a faintly improbable storyline, in which her naive shopgirl is transformed into a starlet, only for her to be destroyed through a combination of limited ability, media pressure and the self-seeking ambition of her producer husband, Andrea Checchi, who pushes her into a doomed Joan of Arc project. Although casting a dismissive eye over the Cinecittá ballyhoo, Antonioni is more concerned with the psychological impact of Bosé's lonely predicament.
