Our Score
This marvellously evocative study of Jewish immigrant life in turn-of-the-century New York, mainly told in delightfully subtitled Yiddish, features an outstanding lead performance from the Oscar-nominated Carol Kane. She plays Gitl, the wife of Steven Keats, summoned from the old country after he has been in America for a dangerous few years. Unsurprisingly she finds him a changed man, so she sets out to make her own way in the New World. Electing to film in black-and-white, director Joan Micklin Silver (Head over Heels, Between the Lines) creates a world previously only seen in old photos and such Hollywood forays as Funny Girl and Rhapsody in Blue. Her film feels so real you can smell the herrings.
