Review
Our Score
by
Alan Jones
This seminal classic from director Tod Browning is one of the most famous horror movies ever made, but by modern standards it is rather talky, stagebound and bloodless, with most of its important chills occurring off-screen. However, it remains the most subtly romantic and highly atmospheric rendition of Bram Stoker's tale about the Transylvanian count, with Browning orchestrating the opening scenes to macabre perfection. Character actor Bela Lugosi shot to fame recreating his starring Broadway stage role, and a neglected sequel,
Dracula's Daughter
, followed five years later. He never managed to escape from the role, right up to his swansong performance in cult sci-fi
Plan 9 from Outer Space
.
Summary
The undead Count spreads terror through the fog-shrouded streets of London until a small group of vampire-hunters unite to destroy him once and for all. Horror based on Bram Stoker's classic novel, starring Bela Lugosi, David Manners, Dwight Frye, Helen Chandler and Edward Van Sloan.
