Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Steve Carell and Juliette Binoche make an unlikely romantic pairing in this uplifting comedy drama from director Peter Hedges (Pieces of April). Dan (Carell) is a middle-aged widower bringing up three daughters, while writing a family advice column for a city newspaper. They all think he's resigned to being single forever until a chance meeting in a bookshop with the alluring Marie (Binoche). But as luck would have it, Marie is already involved with Dan's brother Mitch (Dane Cook), leaving put-upon Dan to sweep his new-found love under the carpet during a boisterous family get-together at his parents' house. Milking the socially awkward set-up for tears as well as laughs, Hedges delivers a tender delight. Of course, nothing here bears much relation to "real life"; instead, it's a genteel fantasy about love, second chances and the healing power of family.
