Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

He may have been part of the same wave of maverick film-makers that spawned the likes of George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese, but writer/director John Milius has never been afforded the same mainstream recognition. Documentary-makers Joey Figueroa and Zak Knutson go part of the way to explaining why, in this portrait of an outspoken right-wing rebel and his many clashes with studio bosses. Beyond the films he made himself (Dillinger, Conan the Barbarian, Big Wednesday), Milius brought his writing talent - uncredited and credited - to Dirty Harry, Jaws and Apocalypse Now. But his larger-than-life personality was often his undoing, not least after the controversy surrounding the Soviet-baiting Red Dawn. Contemporaries and family members wax lyrical about the Hollywood outsider - recovering from a stroke as this documentary was shot - in an engrossing film that will encourage viewers to revisit many of the movies on which he left his mark.
