Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

With this erotic thriller, director Uli Edel (Last Exit to Brooklyn) attempted to out-steam the same year's Basic Instinct, but, although it makes for rather hokey fun, it lacks the outrageous flair of Paul Verhoeven's notorious hit. Madonna stars as the femme fatale accused of killing her elderly millionaire boyfriend; Willem Dafoe plays the lawyer who gets seduced into a dangerous affair with his client. The story is absolute rot, of course, and it's more interesting to guess how much of the erotic footage survived the snip. Madonna proves adept at shedding her clothes and handling candle wax, while Dafoe goes through the film largely on autopilot. However, the distinguished supporting cast - Joe Mantegna, Julianne Moore, Anne Archer, Jürgen Prochnow and Frank Langella - adds some much needed class to the proceedings.
