Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This is a smashing, hard-bitten film noir from that great postwar period when weak men fell headlong for tough femmes fatales, and destiny took no hostages. Lawrence Tierney - better-known in recent years for masterminding those pesky Reservoir Dogs - is married to pretty Audrey Long but head-over-heels in love with her divorced sister, sultry Claire Trevor; you just know no good can come of this. The surprise for today's viewers is that the man behind the camera is former editor Robert Wise, who went on to West Side Story and The Sound of Music, but was also one of Hollywood's most underrated "tough-guy" directors - check out I Want to Live! and Odds against Tomorrow if you need proof.
