Our Score
Susan Sarandon's mother hen dominates this adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's much-loved novel about four impoverished sisters growing up during the American Civil War. Australian director Gillian Armstrong jettisons some of the schmaltz that adorned the earlier film versions, allowing Winona Ryder (who is superbly cast as the spirited Jo) to emote like mad. It may have been eclipsed by Greta Gerwig's 2019 take on the story, but still features a fine cast, including Claire Danes, Christian Bale and Kirsten Dunst in small roles.

Summary

Four sisters are raised by their strong-willed mother while their father is away fighting in the American Civil War. Although the eldest, tomboy Jo, yearns to become a writer and her sister Meg dreams of being married, the girls remain firmly united as the family steers a course through hard times and tragic events. Period drama, based on Louisa May Alcott's novel, with Winona Ryder, Susan Sarandon, Claire Danes, Samantha Mathis and Kirsten Dunst.
