Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Art Carney strikes a blow for the older generation - and won an Oscar in the process - with this story of a widower in his 70s who, after being evicted from his New York apartment, sets off on an odyssey across America with his cat, Tonto. Intending to call on his grown-up children along the way, he ends up discarding a few prejudices. Paul Mazursky directs with a keen eye for characters including Ellen Burstyn, as a woman who finds Harry's charm a bit too much, and Larry Hagman as a son forced to confront his own failure. Melanie Mayron makes an impact as a teenage hitch-hiker, but - all the way through - it's Carney's performance that most compels.
