The shadow of 1972 black comedy Harold and Maude hangs over this quirky, melancholy drama in which two radically different characters - she's an optimist and he's a pessimist - meet and become lovers after gatecrashing a funeral. But whereas Maude is a 70-something Holocaust survivor, the heroine in this less-daring sister piece is Annabel (Mia Wasikowska), a perky teen with a tumour whose carefree demeanour disguises a very real fear that she could die at any moment. Into her orbit comes Enoch (Henry Hopper, son and the spitting image of Dennis), an introspective loner whose best friend is Hiroshi, the ghost of a Japanese Second World War airman. Played for more substantial laughs or drama, it could have worked, but its winsome tone and earnest delivery leave it, like Hiroshi, stuck in a dreary limbo.

A man who has lost interest in life after a tragedy takes to attending strangers' funerals, watched over by the ghost of a kamikaze pilot. He falls in love with a terminally ill teenager, who is determined to make the most of the time she has left. Gus Van Sant's drama, starring Mia Wasikowska and Henry Hopper.
