Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

It may not be a classic, but there's no way you can watch this charming rites-of-passage picture and not end up smiling. Perfectly pitched and without a hint of condescension, this will be an inspiration to all those children who have suffered at school because of their weight. Charlie Talbert gives a truly vibrant performance as the amiable, resilient teenager "from hearty stock", who not only overcomes the snide teasing of physique fascist James Van Der Beek, but also steals his girl at the prom. With George C Scott growling out grandfatherly advice, this is funny, touching and hugely reassuring.
