Summary

An experienced US marine sergeant returns to a former unit to help train a squad of raw recruits and prepare them for deployment to war zones. While there, he clashes with the platoon under his command, who don't see the need for his stricter methods during a time of peace, as well as his more youthful commanding officer, and also his ex-wife, with whom he wishes to reconnect. Action adventure, directed by and starring Clint Eastwood. With Marsha Mason, Everett McGill, Moses Gunn, Mario Van Peebles, and Bo Svenson.

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Clint Eastwood struts his stuff here as a grizzled gunnery sergeant training rookie soldiers. The movie recycles many clichés of the genre, from the misfit recruit gaining his dignity to the old, die-hard veteran butting heads with the modern-thinking major. There's a by-the-numbers feel to it all, but Eastwood is the main reason to watch, as he whips the troops into shape in readiness for the invasion of Grenada. It's a movie the US Department of Defense openly condemned - "drill sergeants are not permitted by regulations to swear at recruits".
