Of the eleven features made so far by Taiwanese director Ang Lee, two have already won the Golden Bear at the Berlin film festival. Yet this is far superior to either The Wedding Banquet or Sense and Sensibility. Although the prime influence on Lee's stately style and several of the film's themes is the Japanese genius Yasujiro Ozu, there is more than a hint of Woody Allen in this complex ensemble comedy, as the action flits between the problems facing each member of master chef Lung Sihung's family. The performances are light and believable, the dialogue full of wit, warmth and wisdom. And as for the food ...

Summary
