Eyes without a Face

Eyes without a Face

Our Score
This is one of the most haunting horror films ever made. Director Georges Franju made his name with a series of inspired documentary shorts, and it's the realism of his approach that makes this poetic fantasy so unnerving. There's nothing of the hammy Hollywood mad scientist in Pierre Brasseur, as he and assistant Alida Valli resort to murder in order to rebuild the face of his daughter, Edith Scob. This is cold and calculating science, simultaneously on the verge of breakthrough and the breakdown of morality. Franju's control of atmosphere is masterly, Eugen Schüfftan's photography is outstanding, and Auguste Capelier deserves a mention for designing Scob's unforgettable mask.
