Our Score
Although it became something of a totem of post-Franco optimism, this elliptical chronicle of a young woman's tormented inner life is really about the passivity of a population disenfranchised by fascism and the guilt it would have to endure before Spain's painful memories could be assuaged. As the child who believes she has power over death after witnessing the demise of her father, Ana Torrent superbly conveys that mix of terror and innocence that is unique to childhood. However, Carlos Saura muddles matters by having Geraldine Chaplin play both Ana's mother and Ana as an adult.
