Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

The 1991 action classic gets an unnecessary 21st-century upgrade from cinematographer-turned-director Ericson Core (Invincible). Home & Away regular Luke Bracey replaces Keanu Reeves as Johnny Utah, a hotshot FBI agent who infiltrates a gang of extreme sports-loving criminals responsible for a spate of elaborate heists. Whereas the original was filled with humour and gung-ho machismo, this Fast and Furious-style update is a joyless experience. Without any lighter moments, the criminals' quest to live on the edge becomes a series of (admittedly well-choreographed) stunts sandwiching an earnest and predictable plot. Central to this is the connection (or lack thereof) between Bracey and Edgar Ramirez's Bodhi. The duo's relationship feels like a lengthy interview rather than a bromance, leading to a third-act chase that is bereft of any kind of tension. Considering the number of years it took to be made, it's disappointing Point Break is such an average action film, with the title being the only positive similarity to its predecessor.
