Our Score
Although it looks every inch the industry-standard gung-ho alien-invasion blockbuster - a hardware trolley-dash through Starship Troopers, Battle Los Angeles and Pacific Rim - the UK-shot Edge of Tomorrow has a secret weapon: a time-loop device. Tom Cruise plays against type as a cowardly global PR for the Allies who's sadistically packed off to the front (a terrifying D-Day-style beach landing). Instantly killed, he awakes 24 hours previously and endlessly relives this apocalyptic Groundhog Day, allowing him to train, second-guess the aliens and get to know Emily Blunt's special forces poster girl. It's a bloodless romance and the action builds to an anticlimax, but the story is also adapted with surprising wit amid the banging and crashing by Christopher McQuarrie and Jez and John-Henry Butterworth (from a novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka). Director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) has fun with a platoon of Aliens-style "grunts", too, including Brits Jonas Armstrong, Charlotte Riley and Franz Drameh (Attack the Block), and he spins the reincarnation trope with thrilling momentum.

An inexperienced military officer is sent to the front line in a war against an alien invasion, and dies within minutes. However, at the point of death, he is transported back in time to relive his last day again. As he faces the same battle over and over again, the experience he gains turns him into the ultimate warrior. Sci-fi adventure based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka's novel All You Need Is Kill, starring Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt and Brendan Gleeson.
