Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Having honed their craft on Saturday Night Live and co-hosting the Golden Globes, the double act of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler gets a well-deserved feature showcase. They are the eponymous sisters who are called back to their childhood home to sort their belongings before parents James Brolin and Dianne Wiest sell the property. That's the cue for throwing a party like it's 1989. Of course the girls are older now but not quite grown up. In classic odd couple style, Fey is the wild child and Poehler is the shy one - although Fey can play it a bit too broad sometimes. Poehler has a way of balancing her out with a stunning set of deadpan expressions and generally the patter between them (fast and racy) keeps the energy high when director Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect) wanders off track. There isn't much of a story - aside from Poehler's aim to bed the hunk down the road and Fey's attempts to keep a priggish Maya Rudolph from crashing the scene - but putting a feminine touch to the standard frat-house formula lends a certain edge.
