Our Score
Following a cool reception for their debut production Grace of Monaco YRF Entertainment, the US subsidiary of Bollywood powerhouse Yash Raj Films, takes aim at the sort of smart comedy that Woody Allen made in the 1970s - and misses by a Manhattan mile. Its stars provide what power it has - Jason Bateman as the rich dilettante suddenly locked out of his trust fund, Olivia Wilde as the beauty-with-brains who injects meaning into his aimless life, and a particularly fine Billy Crudup as the louche gallerist pal who comes between the two of them. With a piano jazz soundtrack, a script full of references to French cinema, Chekhov, abstract expressionist art and postmodernism, a game of spot-the-Allenism might hold boredom at bay. Writer/director Peter Glanz has even drafted in Tony Roberts (Allen's confidant in Annie Hall) to play a shrink. If it were better written, if the jokes didn't just hit the floor gasping, it would be an admirable homage. But as it is, this can only be considered a misfiring curio.

The heir to a hotel business has never had to make any effort at anything, until he finds his life of luxury brought to an abrupt end when his parents cut him off without a penny at the age of 40. He moves in with his friend, but the arrangement is complicated when he falls in love with his host's girlfriend. Comedy drama, starring Jason Bateman, Olivia Wilde and Billy Crudup.
