Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Overlooked on its release as a routine piece of stiff-upper-lip-manship, this film is, in fact, a fascinating epitaph for the British Empire and a slew of movies about Imperial derring-do. Set in an Africa well brushed by what Harold Macmillan called "the wind of change", it's the story of insurrection in a newly independent state and what the resident British army does about it: nothing except stew and simmer. Staunchly traditional, it's also subversive and satirical, with a stand-out performance by Richard Attenborough as the apoplectic RSM. Mia Farrow appears in her screen debut as a Swedish UN official.
