Our Score
Two friends try to outdo each other to prove their bad-boy credentials in this tale of rebellious Belfast teenagers. High-flying student Malachy (the Harry Potter series' Rupert Grint) and his wayward best pal Luke (Robert Sheehan) have their idyllic post-exams summer disrupted by Michelle (Kimberley Nixon), the flirtatious daughter of Malachy's leisure-centre boss (James Nesbitt). The boys then embark on an escalating series of drug-fuelled dares to impress her, which has almost inevitably tragic consequences. Directors Lisa Barros D'Sa and Glenn Leyburn aim for the sexually charged edginess of television's Skins, but fall back on glib outrage with little time spent examining what makes their characters tick. Grint fares well as the more fully realised of the three leads, as he walks a thin line between straight and crooked paths, but any underlying moral the film attempts to put across gets blurred by a lifeless and hackneyed script.
