Summary

The veteran entertainer returns with his annual New Year's Eve extravaganza. Gathering a star-studded audience at Maidstone Studios, he prepares to welcome in 2017 with help from his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, and an eclectic roster of guests performers. Among the music-industry luminaries claiming a moment in the spotlight tonight are vocalist Chaka Khan, who performs her classic I'm Every Woman, and Christine and the Queens joins Jools and his Orchestra for a unique cover. Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Roy Wood revisits hits from days with The Move and Wizzard, while Rag'n'Bone Man performs a `Motown' cover. Gregory Porter makes a return appearance at the Hootenannty, five years after his debut at the party, and Martin Fry's ABC celebrate 35 years of their classic album The Lexicon of Love. Seasick Steve also returns to the Hootenanny, 10 years after his first showing at the event. Plus, music by Paris-based electro act Caravan Palace, Irish rockabilly star Imelda May, and poet John Cooper Clarke, in collaboration with former Stranger Hugh Cornwell. As the midnight hour draws near, the Pipes and Drums of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards are on hand to announce the arrival of January 1.

Party by the Thames, or Jools? Flicking between them might be the answer, depending on whether this year’s pre- and post-fireworks performer, Robbie Williams (11.25pm BBC1), is playing a hit big enough to tear you from the Hootenanny (11.20pm BBC2) Joining in with Jools Holland’s celebrations are several singers who might fare very well in front of his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra: Chaka Khan, Gregory Porter, Imelda May and Ruby Turner are all on the bill, as are Seasick Steve, Ali Campbell, Christine & the Queens and Move/Wizzard maestro Roy Wood.

Alternatively there’s end-of-year chat with Alan Carr (9pm C4), who welcomes Danny Dyer, Sinitta and Keith Lemon; and Graham Norton (10.25pm BBC1), talking to Marion Cotillard, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender.

Have a tablet or laptop to hand when midnight strikes: for the first time you can control a 360-degree panorama version of the BBC’s London fireworks coverage via its website. The display’s also on Sky1.
