Vanessa Hudgens and Julianne Hough to star in live Grease musical

The High School Musical actress will stick to her roots in the three-hour broadcast set to air on US network Fox in 2016

US network Fox’s live broadcast of Grease is going through some “magic changes” with the announcement of two main cast members.

Former Dancing with the Stars professional Julianne Hough is set to don the infamous leather suit as Sandy, while High School Musical actress Vanessa Hudgens will play leader of The Pink Ladies, Rizzo.

“Grease is one of the movies that made me want to be an entertainer and I have literally been waiting my whole life to play Sandy,” said Hudgens. “This is my dream role and performing it live on television will be one of the most thrilling opportunities I’ve had in my career so far.”

Both actresses have plenty of relevant experience. Hough’s stint on Dancing With the Stars lasted from 2007-2009 before a brief stint touring as a country singer in 2009 and several film roles including 2011’s Footloose and 2013’s Safe Haven, meanwhile Hudgens – in addition to the trio of HSM films – played Mimi in Neil Patrick Harris’ production of Rent back in 2010.

It’s not yet clear who is “born to hand jive” as teen heart throb Danny Zuko, but names are already being thrown around with ideas ranging from Justin Bieber (yes, really) to Hudgens’ High School Musical co-star (and ex-boyfriend) Zac Efron.
