Sam Smith crowned best artist by iTunes and MTV

The soul singer has rounded off a successful year with accolades from the online record shop and music channel

Sam Smith has been named best artist of 2014 by iTunes UK and MTV.

It’s been quite a year for the soul singer. Having won the BRIT Critics’ Choice Award back in February, Smith has gone on to have a number one album with The Lonely Hour, be nominated for six Grammy awards and is tipped to sing the next Bond theme.

Smith said: “I’m very, very thankful and owe so much to iTunes for their incredible support with In The Lonely Hour. It’s an honour to be named artist of the year. I’m going to have a drink now…”

The award for best song went to Rather Be (featuring Jess Glynne) by Clean Bandit. Royal Blood won best new artist, Paolo Nutini’s Caustic Love took best album and Frozen scooped the awards for both bestselling album and film. Smith’s album was the second biggest of the year.

Only a few hours later the 22-year-old continued his winning streak, beating the likes of Beyonce and Taylor Swift to be crowned MTV’s best artist of 2014.
