Katie Melua reveals she had a spider living in her ear for a week
The tiny arachnid was discovered by a doctor after the singer complained of a strange rustling sound in her ear
Yes, as strange as it sounds – and as much as it will make arachnophobes’ skin crawl – it’s true. Katie Melua had a tiny spider living in her ear.
The 30-year-old singer made the shocking discovery when she visited her doctor a week after she had begun to hear a strange rustling sound. She had worried that it was an early sign of hearing problems but had never imagined what she would see when the doctor used a medical camera to look inside her ear.
“The thing looked TERRIFYING up-close on the doctor’s camera,” wrote Melua on her Instagram account. But she seemed relatively unphased by the incident, adding “once he took him out it was pretty small. Now it’s in this little test tube, alive and seemingly fine.”
The British-Georgian singer – best known for her debut hit The Closest Thing to Crazy – said she believed an old pair of headphones was responsible for her strange experience.
“Basically I used these old in-ear monitors to block out sound on a flight. A little spider must have been in them and crawled inside my ear and stayed there for the week.”
Clearly not holding a grudge, Melua took the tiny jumping spider home in the container and released it into her garden. We’re just hoping that next time she performs her 2006 single Spider’s Web she dedicates it to her little friend…
