Channel 4 request the pleasure of your company to celebrate the marriage of Benjamin Till and Nathan Taylor.
That’s right, they’re offering viewers a seat (in the comfort of their own living rooms) at one of the UK’s first gay weddings. The nuptials, taking place after Saturday 29 March when same-sex marriage will become legal in England and Wales, will be aired on TV, in an hour-long show introduced and narrated by Stephen Fry.
But the two grooms won’t be the only extraordinary thing about the day.
Did we mention that Benjamin and Nathan’s ceremony will be performed entirely in song?
Our Gay Wedding: The Musical will follow the pair as they write and stage their entire wedding day as a musical with “sung vows, sung readings and show-stopping ensembles” as well as “songs from some very special surprise guest stars and showbiz legends.”
The decision to perform their marriage rite was an easy one for Till and Taylor – Till is the composer of several documentary musicals while Nathan is a musical theatre performer.
Of their musical wedding day, the soon to be newly-weds said: “We’ve been together for nearly 12 years, and never thought we’d get the chance to get married, for real. Doing what we both do for a living has meant that we’ve spent our entire lives expressing emotion through song, so getting married in a musical, particularly one that we’re writing ourselves, felt like the most natural thing in the world.”
“We are proud to be marking a huge milestone for gay rights – a cause that has long been close to Channel 4’s heart. I’m enormously grateful to Benjamin and Nathan for sharing their day with us, and for the talent, creativity and generosity they’re bringing to this amazing piece of work,” added John Hay, commissioning editor for Channel 4 arts.
