…Those on a budget

Tablet Google’s free and open Android operating system has seen lots of companies release their own tablets for less than £100. Yet, even if you need a decent tablet on the cheap, avoid lesser-known brands — low prices often translate to poor touchscreens and limited support. Look instead for a good-quality seven-inch model around the £150 price point.

Laptop Look for a laptop that delivers only the features that you really need. Low-cost netbooks are a good choice as their main use will be for writing, sending email and connecting to the internet.

Laptop If you plan to use your laptop for work while on the go, or to stay connected on holiday, size and weight are critical. Look for a model that can fit in a bag and is light enough so your back won’t feel the strain. A small and lightweight netbook is ideal, or if you can afford the high price tag, an ultraportable is the perfect blend of high-performance and portability.

…Families and friends

Tablet You need a tablet with a large screen of nine inches or more, wi-fi for connecting to your home network for surfing the web and a robust construction so it can withstand the rigours of family living. Make sure it has at least 32GB of storage for apps and photos. Look for a tablet with parental controls to stop children from surfing the internet or downloading apps without your permission.

Laptop Look for a good all-round laptop that matches the power of a desktop PC. A screen of 15 inches or more and a full-size keyboard will ensure that you can work and play in comfort, while plenty of ports ensure that all your devices — such as cameras, camcorders and printers — can be connected up too. Make sure it has 3GB of RAM and a dual core processor for a speedy performance, and at least a 500GB hard drive for storing digital photos and home movies.

…Home office tasks

Tablet With plenty of work apps available, including word processing and spreadsheet apps, a tablet can almost rival a laptop. Some tablets — such as the BlackBerry PlayBook — have dedicated business features. If you prefer familiar Windows software, consider a Windows Surface tablet, which comes with Office pre-installed. If you send a lot of emails or write a lot of long documents, consider an adaptable tablet that has a slide-out keyboard, or buy an attachable keyboard.

Worth considering Windows Surface RT, Asus Eee Pad Transformer.

Laptop A desktop replacement laptop will be able to cope with basic and advanced computing work and have a larger screen for those who want to edit photos, or watch the odd film, as well as perform office tasks.

…Entertainment and games

Tablet Look for a large, high-definition screen for watching movies, along with decent speakers and at least one headphone socket. Newer tablets with more advanced graphics chips will excel at playing games, and you should aim for plenty of storage. Built-in apps, such as an ebook reader, will complete the picture. You’ll need at least 64GB of storage and access to an app store with tons of games, books, movies and music.

Worth considering Apple’s iPad 4

Laptop If you want to use your laptop as a one-stop shop for entertainment as well as straight-out computing, then a multimedia laptop could be right for you. To enjoy playing the latest video games you’ll need a laptop with a dedicated graphics card, at least 6GB of RAM and a super-fast processor such as an Intel Core i7 or AMD’s Athlon II. To ensure games graphics look great, you’ll need a screen of at least 17 inches with a resolution of 1,600 x 1,200 pixels.
