Review

When Ewan McGregor notes that it’s far from easy living on the Hebrides, it’s not clear whether he’s talking about people or animals. It’s a bit of both, as the last in this beautiful, languorous series looks at how people live alongside the birds and beasties.

In winter, 40,000 barnacle geese eat freely from the fields; 20 can eat the same amount as a single cow. Co-existence is at its most controversial with the white-tailed eagles that have been successfully reintroduced. Farmers fear for their lambs, but one of the most impressive sequences features an eagle snatching a fish supper in mid-air.

Summary

The people of the islands reveal how they live side by side with animals. Skye ferryman Donnie MacDonald has discovered some on-board entertainment for his passengers in the form of white-tailed eagles hunting alongside his boat, while Andrew Abrahams is attempting to turn Colonsay into a nature reserve for bees. Narrated by Ewan McGregor.
